ABATTOIR - action plan on plastic bags
Faced with a large litter problem, Visuality helped Abattoir, a company that runs one of the largest open markets in Brussels, secure a project to reduce the use of plastic bags at markets. The municipalities of Anderlecht and Saint-Gilles also partnered up on this project.
Leading the coordination and facilitation of the entire project, Visuality held visual workshops throughout 2014 to foster dialogue on plastic bag use with the participating municipalities and other stakeholders, as well as vendors and customers of different backgrounds who frequent the markets.
Using interactive visual mapping and co-creation sessions, Visuality overcame the challenge of communicating the complex needs of the community and harmful effects of using plastic bags at these markets to a diverse population. Using visual storytelling techniques to discuss the issue, participants were able to understand the problem better, shift their mindset and engage in working towards a viable solution for the future.
Visuality delivered an action plan to greatly reduce the use of plastic bags, with short and long term goals for a transition toward cleaner markets. IBGE/BIM (Bruxelles Environnement / Brussel Leefmilieu), the public authority responsible for the environment in the Brussels-Capital Region, might align its strategy with the plan’s policy recommendations.
